The J&K Police on Thursday claimed to have foiled a major attack ahead of Republic Day by arresting five operatives of the Jaish-e-Mohammad militant group.

Those arrested were identified by the police as Aijaz Ahmed Sheikh, Umar Hameed Sheikh, Imtiyaz Ahmed Chikla, alias Imran, Sahil Farooq Gojri, and Naseer Ahmed Mir, all from Srinagar.

“They were active cadre of the proscribed terror outfit JeM and involved in recent terror incidents in the city,” Deputy Inspector General of Police, Central Kashmir Range, VK Birdi said during a press conference. “With the busting of this module, we have foiled a major attack.”

He said the module had plans of carrying out an IED attack in Srinagar. The module was also involved in two grenade attacks at the Kashmir University gate and Habbak crossing in the city. It was also threatening shopkeepers.
