A restaurant was penalised for overcharging on mineral water bottles in the summer capital, Srinagar, an official spokesperson said here today.

During a surprise inspection, a team of the Legal Metrology Department penalised a local restaurant for overcharging on mineral water bottles. Under Legal Metrology laws, no dealer or trader can charge more than Maximum Retail Price (MRP) for a bottle of drinking water or cold drink even in a hotel.

He said moreover, the manufacturer and importer of Pre-packaged commodities cannot print two different MRP's on the same product carrying same quantity and meant for same place, city, district or state. It was said that the printing of dual MRP's for the same product meant for same place is a serious offence under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, he said.
