LEH: Thousands of devotees and admirers of His Holiness The Dalai Lama cheered ‘Happy Birthday to You, Your Holiness’ as the Noble Laureate for Peace cut the birthday cake on his 83rd Birthday at Jivetsal Leh on Friday morning at a grand celebration organised by the Tibetan Community and the Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA) Leh.
On his birthday, The Dalai Lama reiterated his commitment to promote religious harmony in the world.
The Dalai Lama said that emotionally, physically and mentally all seven billion human beings are the same. He urged that every individual must contribute to make the world a happier place to live in. The spiritual leader advised Ladakhi people to strengthen and carry forward Ladakh’s legacy of communal harmony. He emphasised for the proper study of Buddhist scriptures and understanding them than mere construction of statues and monasteries.
President Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), Dr Lobsang Sangay, Danden Trizur Rinpoche, Drikung Skyabgon Chhetsang Rinpoche, Thiksay Khanpo Rinpoche, President Anjuman Immamia Leh Ashraf Ali Barcha, MP Ladakh Thupstan Chhewang, MLA Leh Nawang Rigzin Jora, MLC Leh Chering Dorjay and Executive Councillors of LAHDC were among the prominent persons present on the occasion to greet the Dalai Lama besides thousands of devotees including many foreigners.
Wishing the Dalai Lama a happy birthday, President CTA Dr Lobzang Sangay said that this year called for a double celebrations because along with His Holiness’ birthday, CTA is also organising 2018 as a ‘Thank You Year’ to thank the world and India for supporting Tibetan people for their cause over the decades.
He said that the return of The Dalai Lama to Lhasa, the Capital City to Tibet, is coming soon. He informed that The Dalai Lama has visited 67 countries and six continents, authored and co-authored 100 books, and won as many as 50 awards including United Nation’s Earth Award for his commitment towards the environment, US Congressional Gold Medal for a messenger of peace, Jonh Templeton Prize for his commitment to religious harmony and of course the Nobel Prize for Peace. Referring to Delhi Government’s initiative to introduce Happiness Curriculum in schools, which The Dalai Lama has launched last week, Dr Sangsay said such programmes are the need of the hour and some states in America, Canada and Europe are already teaching the curriculum of happiness or secular ethics.
On behalf of the Muslim community of Ladakh, Ashraf Ali Barcha greeted The Dalai Lama. Executive Councillor, Gyal P. Wangyal and Director of The Tawang Foundation Maling Gombu also spoke. Chief Representative Officer of TCV Leh presented vote of thanks. A mesmerising traditional Ladakhi as well as Tibetan cultural performances have also been presented in honour of the Dalai Lama on his 83rd Birthday.
