Jammu : In a brazen act, the Regional Transport Office (RTO), Jammu, today issued around 1,200 vanity and other numbers before beginning the formal process of allotment of numbers to the public.
The RTO, Jammu, had issued a notice on February 28, in which it informed the public that the new series of vehicles registration (JK02BT) would be launched from March 7. It had invited applications from the public for the vanity numbers.
“This is for the information of public that the new series of ‘JK02BT’ for registration of vehicles is going to be started from March 7, 2017. All desirous applicants are required to submit their applications for vanity/special numbers along with the registration file. The applications for vanity numbers will be accepted up to March 18 only,” the notice read.
Shockingly, the RTO pasted a list of vehicle registration numbers of the JK02BT series on its premises today, issuing around 1,200 numbers. Most of the vanity numbers have been issued without proper applications, said sources.
The sources said there was a well-knit nexus between RTO officials and agents.
“The numbers were given to accommodate applications from the agents, who charge extra for special numbers from their clients,” the sources said, adding “The numbers were allotted on Sunday and the list was pasted on Monday morning.”
As per the rules for the vanity numbers, the number can be issued on the first come, first served basis if only single application is received for any particular number. In case of more than one application, the vanity number will be put to open auction and the highest bidder will get it.
The sources said the vanity numbers some of which may fetch more than Rs 1 lakh at the auction were given for Rs 5,000 each.
Ashwani Khajuria, RTO, Jammu, said, “We had a lot of applications pending for registration, so to reduce the workload on the department we started issuing registration numbers.”
