JAMMU: PDP chief and former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday found herself on the wrong side of the table soon after she posted series of tweets, questioning appointment of Aseem Sawhney, counsel for one of the rape accused in the Kathua case, as Additional Advocate General.
In her tweets Mehbooba Mufti had also hoped that Governor N. N Vohra would intervene in the matter.
“Rewarding those who defend alleged murderers & rapists is abhorrent & a shocking violation of the spirit of justice. Such a move will only serve to encourage the rape culture rampant in our society. Expect the @jandkgovernor to intervene”, tweeted Mehbooba Mufti.
In another tweet, the former Chief Minister wrote, “Ironic that a day after celebrating World Day for International Justice, the defence counsel in the horrific rape & murder Kathua case has been appointed as Additional Advocate General”.
Aseem Sawhney promptly responded to her tweets and wrote, “I am a lawyer or an accused ? Be nice to me, I may be your lawyer one day as a saying goes @ Mehbooba Mufti”.
“Had’nt been conducting #Rassana_trial since July 2 due to preoccupations in HC, moreover having been a lawyer for one of accused does it make a lawyer an accused too. Lawyers are professionals and can’t refuse briefs. As AAG will now not contest any case against State”, Sawhney commented in his second tweet.
Meanwhile, soon after his comments went viral, Mehbooba was bombarded by her followers and questioned her stand on the issue.
A twitter follower wrote, “Totally flabbergasted over the hackneyed rhetoric of human rights issues raised by NC-PDP these days! Least we forget that you’re our yesterday’s specialized scoundrels, offenders and abusers of all rights ! God save you”.
Another London based Dogra activist tweeted in response, “Ma’am which Khap Panchayat are you heading? You are prematurely & with a shocking impunity repeatedly pronouncing who is guilty. You are violating human rights by challenging the right to defence. Innocent until proven guilty even more so in a convoluted, politicised case like this”.
There were very few voices, who defended Mehbooba Mufti’s strong reaction to the appointment. Another follower wrote, “Ma’am your criticism & personal indulgence on matter looks like you are not serious for justice of law to prevail but you are prejudiced with predetermined opinion against alleged persons who are facing trial still not proven guilty. Had it been the case in kashmir would u have been so biased?

Another follower bluntly asked her, ” you supported and defended Afzal Guru, he was a convicted murderer. What about that?

Commenting on her tweet, another netizen wrote, “When you demand CBI enquiry it is for the justice n When jammu people demand CBI enquiry then they are defending rapist Such a hypocrisy at high level”.

Those in support of Aseem Sawhney wrote,”Every person has a right of defence in our Constitution & a lawyer is at liberty to take up any case. There is no point criticising the appointment of the defence counsel of kathua rape case as an additional advocate general”.

“Public is able to understand your discomfort and your worries after all your ploy to defame Hindus and create a narrative for dragging Jammu also in the hell fire like Kashmir is about to be exposed and the naked truth is about to surface. Just count your days of peril”, wrote another twitter follower of Mehbooba Mufti.

“This is the beauty of our #Judiciary , every one gets equal opportunity of defense. Hv you forgotten dreaded 26/11 #Terrorist #AjmalKasab. He was provided with best of legal assistance to defend. Should the #Advocate, who did his professional duty, be outcast from the society?
