The Jammu and Kashmir Excise Department has identified 50 wine shops on national, state highways and within radius of 500 meter. The Excise Department started identification of the wine shops following a Supreme Court order in this connection.

“Yes, we have identified 50 shops within the 500 metre radius of the national and state highways in the state and the process for serving notices to them is on,” said official sources.
Pertinently, on December 15, the apex court banned liquor shops on highways. The SC ruled that the existing licenses for liquor shops along the highways were not to be renewed. The order by the top court says that liquor shops must be at least 500 metres away from highways. It also ordered liquor banners and advertisements to be removed.

The Supreme Court had directed the Chief Secretary and police chiefs of various states to implement the order. Earlier on December 7, the SC had said that revenue generation could not be held as a valid reason for granting licenses to liquor shops along highways. The apex court had observed that the authorities must adopt a positive attitude to get rid of drunken driving and the fatalities due to it.
