Nearly 10-15 activists from a saffron outfit issued ‘polite threats’ to food giants serving non-vegetarian food in Opulent Mall in Ghaziabad on Thursday evening. The activists came to the mall around 4pm and asked the outlets to stop serving non-vegetarian food due to ongoing Navratras festivities.

The mall management said that it did not inform the police as no violence or altercation ensued during the incident. The mall is located on GT Road near Chaudhary Morh, a prime location.

“They had asked the food outlets not to serve non-vegetarian food till the festivities are on. We told them that we will roll out the pending stock and will chalk out the future course of action. We have spoken to licensing authorities about the issue,” said Rovish Tyagi, security head, Opulent Mall.

The mall houses Nazeer restaurant, which serves non-vegetarian specialities, McDonald’s, and a dedicated food court area. Officials said that the activists had approached them twice in evening, and had also told them that they had closed down similar establishments at Raj Nagar District Centre.

“Since no violence ensued, we did not call the police. We resolved it at our end. If there is any further action, we will ask the police to intervene,” Tyagi said.

Manish Mishra, circle officer (city), said that he will get the issue clarified at the earliest and will “ensure that no untoward incident takes place.”

During Navratras, a majority of the non-vegetarian food outlets in city shut shop to respect the religious sentiments of Hindus and also due to slow sales.

Recently in Gurgaon, self-proclaimed saffron outfit members shut more than 300 meat shops, including popular fast food outlet, KFC, in Sector 14. The protesters also demanded the closure of all meat shops in the city. On Wednesday morning, they also moved to similar shops in areas such as DLF, Sushant Lok, Sohna Road and Badshahpur.

However, in Uttar Pradesh, the majority of the meat shops are already shut due to the crackdown on illegal meat shops.
