A skier from Russian Federation was killed and four others rescued after being caught under snow avalanche in ski resort of Gulmarg in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday.

He said the rescue operation was launched immediately to rescue the foreign skiers trapped under snow. "We warned them before they ascended upwards but they ignored our advice and went ahead", said Muhammad Haneef Balki, the chief executive officer of Gulmarg development authority.

He said body of the deceased skier was retrieved and taken to District Hospital for post-mortem.

With the killing of Russian skiers at Gulmarg on Friday, the death toll due to avalanches in Kashmir Valley this season has risen to 21. The group had arrived at Delhi on 13 February and moved to Gulmarg on February 14.
This is second skiing-related death at the Gulmarg resort in the past month. Last month, 11 people were killed after their vehicle was hit by an avalanche in Kupwara district.

An official of tourism department said the group of skiers today had ventured into the back country area, where advisories on snow avalanches were already issued. Besides, the department has also erected sign boards at different places at upper reaches of Gulmarg informing the skiers about the avalanche areas. The duo was believed to be experienced skiers exploring the uppermost reaches of Gulmarg reached by a high-altitude gondola.

"They were informed and had been given in writing that they wouldn't go for skiing in the outbound areas as there was an avalanche warning", he was quoted as saying by media reports.

Officials said the group skiers had moved to Shinmai bowl despite strict instructions that it was a avalanche-prone zone.
