Sanjiv Chawla, a key accused in the match-fixing scandal involving former South African cricket team captain Hansie Cronje in 2000, was extradited from the UK on Thursday.

The 50-year-old British national, accompanied by a crime branch team from London, reached IGI Airport this morning. He was produced before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sudhir Kumar Sirohi who sent him to 12-day custody after the Delhi Police sought his 14-day custodial interrogation.

The police told the court that Chawla was involved in fixing five matches and had to be taken to various places and confronted with certain people to unearth the larger conspiracy.

Cronje, who died in a plane crash in 2002, was also involved, the court was told. Chawla is alleged to have played a central role in conspiring with Cronje to fix a South African tour to India in February-March 2000.
