The Jammu and Kashmir Police are going to tweak the FIR registered against the misuse of social media after facing sharp criticism from public for invoking an illegal Section.

The police would remove Section 66A of the Information Technology (IT) Act, 2000, from the FIR which was struck down by the Supreme Court in March 2015 as unconstitutional on the grounds of violating the freedom of speech.

“Yes, we are amending the FIR and may invoke different Sections as per the progress of the case,” said Superintendent of Police Tahir Ashraf, who heads the cyber division of J&K police.

Taking a serious note of the misuse of the social media, the Cyber Police Station, Kashmir, on Monday registered an FIR under Section 13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 188, 505 of the IPC and 66-A (b) of the IT Act.
