A senior resident doctor at Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has tested positive for the new coronavirus, hospital sources said Thursday.

The doctor is from the physiology department and doesn't have a history of overseas travel.

A number of Delhi doctors have contracted the virus, known as Sars-CoV-2, and hospital staff are urging the government to improve the supply and quality of protective gear.

The coronavirus causes a potentially fatal respiratory illness called Covid-19.
