The death toll due to Covid-19 in the United States rose past 50,000 on Friday, the highest recorded numbers of death anywhere in the world since the pandemic began in China's Wuhan city last year. Meanwhile, India recorded 1,752 fresh cases, taking the total number of infected people to over 24,000, while the death toll surged past 700 with 37 more fatalities reported on Friday.
To some relief, the Union Home Ministry, in a late-night order, allowed the opening of local shops and small businesses in residential complexes selling non-essential goods. The holy month of Ramzan also begins Saturday even as the Muslims across the nation have been asked to offer prayers at home in view of the nationwide lockdown.
