Villagers in Assam's Kamrup district have spent Rs 1 crore of their own money to build a wood bridge on the Jaljali river without government support. Over 7,000 people from ten villages in Nagarbera funded construction of the 335-metre bridge, which began in 2018. For decades, crossing the Jaljali river was an uphill task during the monsoon. Country-made boats were used to ferry schoolchildren, patients and food. Assam's flood-prone area is around 40 percent of its total area and around 9.4% of the total flood-prone area in India.
