India recorded 27,114 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, pushing the confirmed cases tally in the country to 8,20,916 on Saturday. According to the latest figures released by the Union health ministry on Saturday morning, there are 2,83,407 active cases and 5,15,386 cured/discharged cases in India, while the death toll has now mounted to 22,123. On Friday, Delhi recorded 2,089 fresh coronavirus cases, taking the tally in the city to over 1.09 lakh, while the death toll from the disease mounted to 3,300. The tally of coronavirus cases in Mumbai crossed the 90,000-mark on Friday with 1,354 new patients coming to light, said the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Also, with the highest single-day spike of 875 new cases, the cases tally in Gujarat breached the 40,000-mark, the health department said. The surge in cases comes at a time when several districts across India are re-imposing lockdowns to contain the spread of infection and break the chain. These include Pune and Thane in Maharashtra and Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala among others along with the whole of Uttar Pradesh. On Friday, the Union Health Ministry said that from 2.82 per cent a month earlier, India's Covid-19 case fatality rate has declined to 2.72 per cent which is lower than that of many other countries. Also, there is an upward trend in the recovery rate which was recorded at 62.42 per cent on Friday. In 18 states and UTs the recovery rates are higher than the national average, the ministry said.
