Independence Day is annually celebrated on 15th August, as a National holiday in India commemorating the nation's independence from the United Kingdom on 15 August 1947, the day when the provisions of the Indian Independence Act 1947 as passed by the United Kingdom Parliament, which transferred legislative sovereignty to the Indian Constituent Assembly came into effect.

India retained King George VI as head of state until its transition to full republican and Constitution of India 1950 replaced the dominion prefix, Dominion of India with the enactment of the sovereign law Constitution of India. India attained Independence following the Independence Movement noted for largely non violent resistance and civil disobedience.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive at the foreground of Delhi's Red Fort at 7.21 AM on Saturday, August 15 to mark the start of Independence Day celebrations this year. Sources added that the Prime Minister would unfurl the flag at 7.30 AM and speak for between 45 and 90 minutes.

Source said the Prime Minister's schedule at the Red Fort would include a "Guard of Honor" by three branches of the military
