India records highest single-day spike of the year with 59,118 new COVID-19 cases

India, on Friday, reported 59,118 new COVID-19 cases, 32,987 recoveries, and 257 deaths in the last 24 hours, the Union Health Ministry said. This is the highest single-day spike since early October. With this, the total number of COVID-19 cases in the country has touched- 1,18,46,652. 1,12,64,637 people have recovered so far from the deadly pandemic. The total number of active cases across the country stands at 4,21,066. 1.61 lakh people have lost their lives so far.

5,55,04,440 people have been vaccinated so far, according to the Health Ministry. According to the World Health Organisation and Johns Hopkins University Centre data, India is the third worst-affected country in the world after the US and Brazil. The rising number of cases across states has prompted the state governments to embrace extreme measures such as partial lockdowns, night/ weekend curfews.
