Pune Covid-19 outbreak: Night curfew from April 3, hotels and restaurants to remain shut for 7 days

02-04-2021

A day after the city recorded more than 8,000 cases for the second consecutive day, the Pune administration has decided to impose lockdown-like measures in the region for the next 7 days in wake of the alarming coronavirus situation. “Bars, hotels, restaurants will remain closed for 7 days, with only home delivery being allowed. No public functions are permitted, except funerals and weddings. A maximum of 20 people will be allowed at funerals and 50 for weddings. The new order will come into effect from tomorrow,” Pune Divisional Commissioner Saurabh Rao said. Furthermore, a 12-hour night curfew will also be imposed from 6 pm to 6 am in Pune starting tomorrow, April 3. The situation will be reviewed next Friday, Rao said. “Religious places will be completely closed for the next 7 days,” the Pune Divisional Commissioner added. Pune district reported 8,011 new Covid-19 cases on Thursday, pushing its cumulative count to 5,42,422. On Wednesday, the district reported 8,605 new infections, the biggest single-day spike ever for Pune since the pandemic began last year. The fatality count in Pune reached 10,039 yesterday after 65 more people succumbed to the infection. “Of the total number of new cases, 4,103 were reported from the areas located within the Pune Municipal Corporation limits, where the caseload has gone up to 2,73,446,” a health official said. Pimpri Chinchwad, Pune’s neighbouring industrial township, reported 2,113 fresh cases, pushing its caseload to 1,42,251. Meanwhile, Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar on Friday said that the rising number of cases in India’s financial capital is a matter of concern, and that due to the resurge in Covid-19 cases, hospitals in the city are witnessing a shortage of beds and ventilators. “We had been appealing to people since last March but they are showing carelessness. Nobody wants lockdown but keeping in mind the manner in which cases are rising and creating pressure on the health infrastructure, some strict measures will have to be taken,” Pednekar said.
