In a U-turn, the BJP has decided to contest the upcoming election for Delhi mayor and deputy mayor posts.
The election to pick the new mayor of Delhi after the high-stakes municipal polls will be held on January 6 and the last date to file nominations is December 27. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) recently claimed the BJP was planning to support an Independent candidate for Delhi mayoral election and dared it to field its own candidate for the top MCD post. Addressing a press conference on Saturday, senior AAP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha claimed that after losing the Municipal Corporation of Delhi polls, the BJP had said it would not field any candidate for the mayor's post. The AAP last week announced the names of six candidates for various MCD posts, including that of mayor and deputy mayor. The Arvind Kejriwal’s party has named Shelly Oberoi as its candidate for the top post in the civic body. On December 7, the AAP emerged victorious in the MCD polls by bagging 134 seats, ending the 15-year rule of the BJP in the municipal corporation.
