A Qantas flight from Auckland to Sydney that issued a 'mayday' alert, following a reported engine failure, landed safely at Sydney airport on Wednesday. Ambulances were rushed to the airport after the flight -- QF144 -- from Auckland, New Zealand made a 'mayday' call this morning. "Ambulance services at Sydney airport are making an emergency response to an incoming Qantas flight believed to be carrying more than 100 passengers from New Zealand. She further said that paramedics have also been called. Several Australian media earlier reported that the Sydney-bound flight made a 'mayday' call after suffering mid-air engine trouble. A 'mayday' call refers to a distress call that is made by pilots to the air traffic control over radio communication, if there is any emergency. According to the Australian government's aviation regulator, a mayday call indicates an aircraft is in “grave and imminent” danger and requires immediate assistance.
The incident comes three days after a deadly plane crash in Nepal's Pokhara that claimed the lives of 72 people. The Yeti Airlines aircraft carrying 68 passengers and four crew members onboard crashed into a river gorge near the Pokhara International Airport on Sunday. The aircraft was carrying 10 foreigners, including five Indians. According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal Yeti Airlines' 9N-ANC ATR-72 aircraft took off from Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport at 10:33 am. The aircraft crashed on the bank of the Seti River between the old airport and the new airport while landing at the Pokhara airport.
