In Himachal Pradesh, at least 33 people were killed, including seven buried under the ruins of a temple in Shimla, as rains wreaked havoc in the state, triggering landslides that blocked major roads and toppled houses, officials said on Monday.
People are feared trapped under the ruins of a Shiv temple in Shimla's Summer Hill area. The shrine was full of devotees offering prayers on the important day of the Sawan season.
This was the second of two landslides reported from the state capital, which continues to witness heavy rains.
In another landslide here, five bodies were pulled from the rubble and 17 people were rescued in Fagli district, Shimla SP Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi told. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu earlier said nine bodies were pulled from the rubble of a collapsed Shiv temple in Summer Hill district and another site in Fagli district where several houses were buried under mud and silt.
All schools and colleges in the state were closed on Monday. According to the state emergency center, 752 roads were closed in the state due to the accident.
The Meteorological Department on Monday predicted very heavy rain in nine of the 12 districts of the state except Kullu, Kinnaur and Lahaul, and Spiti and issued a yellow warning for Tuesday.
