NCP leader Sharad Pawar on Tuesday said the Congress and its allies fully support the Women's Reservation Bill in Parliament and alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was not properly informed about it.
He also said that the previous Congress governments in Maharashtra and the Center had initiated measures to empower women.
Her statement came a day after Prime Minister Modi said in Madhya Pradesh that the Congress and its allies in the new "ghamandia" (arrogant) alliance had "reluctantly" supported the women's reservation bill in Parliament.
Addressing a press conference here, Pawar said, "Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been talking about the Congress and its 'ghamandi' allies reluctantly supporting the Women's Reservation Act. But that is not true." We all supported the bill wholeheartedly. The Prime Minister was not properly informed."
He said that on June 24, 1994, the Congress government under his leadership announced the Women's Policy in Maharashtra, which was the first in the country.
"Similarly, the Central Congress government introduced the 73rd Constitutional Amendment which paved the way for a 33 percent quota for women in local bodies," said the founder of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).
"When I was the defense minister, 11 percent reservation was given to women in the army, navy, and air force," he said.

Asked about his meeting with industrialist Gautam Adani in Ahmedabad, Pawar said he attended the inauguration at an industrial unit owned by the Baramati businessman. Adani was the chief guest at the function at Sanand Industrial Estate, he said.
On the tensions between India and Canada, Pawar said that his full support as an Indian citizen is in line with the policy of the Indian government.
