South Africa will be hoping to build on their improved performance against the defending champions when they face struggling Bangladesh in their World Cup opener here on Tuesday, knowing full well that taking their foot off the pedal at this stage could spell trouble. South Africa beat Sri Lanka and Australia by more than 100 but a shock defeat to the Netherlands set them back before they destroyed England by 229 runs to get their campaign back on track.
Bangladesh may not look too threatening in the World Cup, but their record against the Proteas, especially in the World Cup, gives them more than a chance in the competition.

Three of South Africa's six ODI defeats to Bangladesh have come in the last four years, including the Tigers beating them by 21 runs in World Cup 2019. The Proteas have lost twice to Asian rivals in their four World Cups so far - 2007 and 2019 - in 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2019. The Proteas cannot afford to take Bangladesh lightly knowing the damage they have caused and the fact that the Asian side is loaded with all-rounders like their skipper Shakib Al Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz.
Captain Shakib, who did not play in his training session on Sunday, remains a concern for Bangladesh. The all-rounder suffered a quad injury against New Zealand in Chennai on October 13 and has not featured in Najmul Hossain Shanto's playing XI since then.
Shanto was adamant that Shakib will be back soon when he last spoke to the media and it remains to be seen if the oldest member of the side will be fit enough to take on the workload.
