After winning the second test against England in Visakhapatnam on Monday, Jasprit Bumrah became the first Indian pace bowler to top the official world test rankings. He played a match-winning performance.
In his reverse swing masterclass, the 30-year-old secured India's series-leveling victory by 106 runs.
It assisted him with leapfroging Australia's Pat Cummins, South African Kagiso Rabada and colleague Ravichandran Ashwin in the authority rankings, the Worldwide Cricket Committee (ICC) said in a proclamation on Wednesday.
Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Bishan Singh Bedi, all Indian spinners, had previously topped the rankings for bowlers in tests.
In Visakhapatnam, Bumrah won the award for player of the match ahead of teammate Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored his first test double hundred.
Left-gave opener Jaiswal climbed 37 spots to 29th in the test batting rankings drove by New Zealand robust Kane Williamson.
India's third test against Britain planned for Rajkot starts on February 15.
