May 28, 2025: Following Wednesday night's sighting of the crescent moon in several Indian cities, including Delhi, Muslim religious officials declared that the nation would celebrate Eid-ul-Azha on June 7.
The moon that marks the beginning of Zil Hijja, the final month of the Islamic calendar, was visible from the mosque in the evening, according to Mufti Mukarram Ahmed, Shahi Imam of Chandni Chowk's Fatehpuri Masjid, who spoke to agencies.
In addition, he claimed, moon sightings have been verified in other states across the nation, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, and Haryana.
"As a result, June 7 will be the celebration of Eid-ul-Azha," Ahmed stated.
He stated that two months and nine days after Eid ul Fitr, people celebrate Eid-ul-Zuha, Azha, or Bakrid. Depending on the moon sighting, the Islamic calendar has 29 or 30 days.
In a statement, the mosque's moon committee declared that Bakrid would be celebrated on Saturday, June 7, following reports of moon sightings in several states of the nation, according to Shahi Imam Syed Shaban Bukhari of Jama Masjid.
Bukhari claims that the first day of Zil Hijja, the final month in the Islamic calendar, is May 29.
The Muslim group Imarat-e-Sharia Hind added that the moon sighting has been verified from various locations across the nation and that the sacrifice festival will take place on June 7.
On this day, Prophet Ibrahim was supposed to sacrifice his son Ismail on Allah's command, according to Islamic tradition. However, an animal was slaughtered in its place after God made sure Ibrahim's son was unharmed.
According to their position, Muslims offer animal sacrifices during the three-day celebration, which is permitted by Indian law.
