India and the US talk about developing military technology together. On Thursday, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri met with US Under Secretary of Defense Elbridge Colby in the United States to discuss cooperation for the co-development and co-production of military equipment.
"The two sides addressed (expanding the scope of) military exercises, cooperating on logistics, intelligence sharing, interoperability of the forces, and regional and global challenges, particularly the Indo-Pacific," according to the Indian Embassy in the United States.
Pavan Kapoor, the deputy national security advisor, attended the conference as well. The India-US COMPACT (Catalysing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce & Technology) project includes defense as one of its main pillars.
The frustrating delay in the delivery of the F-414 engines that would power the Tejas Mark1-A fighter planes is one of the main problems with defense ties. General Electric, a US company, was scheduled to begin supplying in 2023. Separately, 31 drones for monitoring will be supplied by General Atomics, the manufacturer of predator drones. In order to combat any threats, these can also carry weaponry.
"The US-India alliance is on fundamentally strong basis, built on shared interests and mutual respect," Colby said in an X post. As part of this alliance, we at the Department of Defense are working diligently to advance defense cooperation.
Misri and Kapoor also engaged with top US think tank experts during their tour, and they participated in lengthy discussions covering defense cooperation, technology partnerships, trade trends, and important regional and international issues.
"Misri and Kapoor enjoyed a fascinating engagement with key US think tank specialists today," the Indian Embassy in the US tweeted after the encounter on X. Numerous topics were discussed, including important regional and international developments as well as India-US collaboration in trade, technology, and defense.
At a roundtable organized by the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) on Thursday, the two also spoke with top US business leaders on strengthening bilateral cooperation in important areas. According to a statement from the USISPF, the discussion centered on deepening collaboration under the TRUST initiative, which aims to strengthen public-private-academic engagement in order to create a safe, open, and robust innovation ecosystem.
