June 17, 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived here to attend the G7 Summit at Kananaskis, his first visit to Canada in a decade, with discussions with world leaders to be focussed on crucial global issues, including energy security, technology and innovation.
Modi, who is on a three-nation tour, arrived Monday evening (local time) in Canada from Cyprus at the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. The Prime Minister is participating in the G7 Summit for the sixth time in a row, this time from June 16 to 17.
The Ministry of External Affairs previously stated, "At the Summit, the Prime Minister will exchange views on crucial global issues, including energy security, technology and innovation, particularly the AI-energy nexus and Quantum-related issues, with leaders of G-7 countries, other invited outreach countries, and Heads of International Organizations." Prime Minister Modi will also hold several bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the Summit, coming over a month after India's Operation Sindoor that had targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam attacks.
The fact that Carney extended an invitation to Modi to attend the G7 Summit demonstrated the intention of the new administration to restore relations with New Delhi, which had fallen to an all-time low following the murder of pro-Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. After Ottawa attempted to link them to the Nijjar case, India recall its high commissioner and five other diplomats in October of last year. Canadian diplomats were also expelled from India in equal numbers. India had said that the government of Justin Trudeau allowed pro-Khalistani elements to operate from Canada. In March, following Trudeau's resignation from his position as prime minister, economist and political newcomer Carney assumed office. New Delhi stated that it hoped to rekindle ties with Canada based on "mutual trust and sensitivity" following Trudeau's departure.
The advanced economies of the world—France, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Italy, Canada, and the European Union—are all members of the informal Group of Seven (G7). Its members meet annually at the G7 Summit to discuss global economic and geopolitical issues.
Over the past few years, India, the fifth-largest economy in the world, has frequently been invited to the Outreach session of the G7 Summit.
