July 10, 2025: Ms. Yaccarino can point to some accomplishments. Ad revenue is at last on track to grow again this year, even if it remains well below its pre-Musk level.
It may not come as a surprise that a company's chief executive immediately decides to resign after accidentally praising Adolf Hitler. However, this was only one possible explanation for Linda Yaccarino's resignation on July 9—a testament to the ups and downs of her two years as CEO of X, formerly Twitter. The Nazi mishap had come to light the previous day, when users reported that X’s in-house chatbot, Grok.
In a post on X, Yaccarino described her tenure as “the opportunity of a lifetime” and thanked Musk for entrusting her with what she called an “extraordinary mission” protecting free speech, turning the company around, and transforming X into the “Everything App.”
Yaccarino, a former advertising executive and NBCUniversal veteran, joined X in June 2023 after Musk acquired Twitter and rebranded it as X.
She was widely regarded as a strategic hire to stabilize the advertising business of the company, which had been experiencing turmoil as a result of Musk's push for a more open content moderation policy. Under her leadership, X focused on rebuilding advertiser confidence and developing new product offerings such as Community Notes, a user-driven fact-checking feature, and X Money, a financial services initiative slated to launch soon.
“We started with critical work to prioritise user safety — especially for children — and to restore advertiser trust,” she wrote. “The historic business turnaround we have accomplished together has been nothing short of remarkable.” Linda posted on X.
In addition, Yaccarino praised X's function as a global "digital town square" and expressed gratitude to the team, users, and partners for their assistance. Her departure comes as X gears up for its next chapter with xAI, Musk’s artificial intelligence venture, which is expected to be increasingly integrated into the platform’s future roadmap.
Yaccarino did not disclose her next move but indicated she will continue to engage with the platform’s community. “I’ll be cheering you all on as you continue to change the world,” she wrote. “As always, I’ll see you on X.”
Yaccarino has studied liberal arts and telecommunications at Penn State University, according to her profile.
She served as the "strategic and operational bridge" between the global networks, properties, and business units of NBCUniversal. “She is responsible for stewarding the company’s industry-leading portfolio of linear networks, digital and streaming platforms, distribution partnerships, and client relationships. Yaccarino oversees all global, national and local ad sales, partnerships, marketing, ad tech, data, measurement, and strategic initiatives,” says a profile on the company’s website.
She is also credited with generating “over $100 billion in ad sales”.
Yaccarino has been recognised as Business Insider’s “Top 10 People Transforming Advertising”.
At an advertising conference in Miami last month, she conducted an interview with Musk. At the conference, Yaccarino encouraged the audience to welcome Musk with applause and lauded his work ethic.
She continued, "Buddy, I met my match," adding, "Many of you in this room know me, and you know I pride myself on my work ethic."
