July 22, 2025: Authorities said on Tuesday that the number of people who died as a result of their injuries increased to 27 following the crash of the Bangladesh Air Force training fighter jet into a school building in Dhaka.
The F-7 BGI aircraft, a training fighter jet made in China, experienced a "mechanical fault" shortly after takeoff and crashed on Monday into the two-story Milestone School and College building at Diabari in the Uttara neighborhood of Dhaka. “The toll is now 27, and 25 of them are children,” Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus's special adviser, Saidur Rahman, told reporters.
There were approximately 170 injuries, some of which were said to be critical. At hospitals where burn injury patients were treated, cries of despair and pain echo.
At first, twenty deaths were reported, seven of which died overnight from injuries. Flight Lieutenant Mohammad Towkir Islam, the pilot, was among the victims of the crash. In honor of the victims, the government has designated Tuesday as a state day of mourning.
The Chief Advisor's Office said on Monday that all government, semi-government, autonomous, and educational institutions across the country will fly the national flag at half-staff.
