Aug 12, 2025: In a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated India's consistent support for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. "India supports all efforts aimed at the earliest restoration of peace," Modi told Zelenskyy. The two leaders spoke on the phone just four days before the planned summit in Alaska between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to a statement released by the Prime Minister's Office, Modi and Zelenskyy discussed ways to further enhance cooperation in areas of mutual interest and reviewed the progress that has been made in the bilateral partnership. According to the statement, Zelenskyy offered his perspective on the most recent developments pertaining to Ukraine. Modi reiterated India's support for efforts to restore peace as soon as possible and its unwavering support for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. India's commitment to provide any and all assistance in this regard was reiterated by the PM. In the meantime, Zelenskyy made a statement about his phone call with PM Modi on X. “I am grateful to the PM for his warm words of support for our people,” he said.
Zelenskyy said though finally there was a diplomatic possibility to end the war, Russia, instead of demonstrating readiness for a ceasefire, was showing its desire to continue occupation and killings.
Zelenskyy stated, "It is important that India is supporting our peace efforts and shares the position that everything pertaining to Ukraine must be decided with Ukraine's participation." Zelenskyy said, “We agreed to plan a personal meeting in September during the UN General Assembly (session) and to work on an exchange of visits.”
Three days earlier, Putin had contacted PM Modi and other global leaders via phone. Putin had called to inform Witkoff, Trump's envoy, of the outcome of their talks in Moscow.
