Aug 19, 2025: OpenAI has announced ChatGPT Go, a new subscription plan priced at Rs 399 a month that packs in increased message limits, image generation and file uploads for users in India, a market ChatGPT counts as its second-largest and among the fastest growing.

The company also announced that all ChatGPT subscriptions can be paid through UPI, a move that will make it easier for users across India to access OpenAI’s advanced AI tools.

According to a press release, "OpenAI is today introducing ChatGPT Go, a new subscription plan designed to make advanced AI tools more accessible and affordable to users across India, as the adoption of OpenAI's tools grows rapidly across the country." GPT-5 with enhanced Indic language support gives ChatGPT Go users in India greater access to popular features like increased message limits, image generation, file uploads, and memory. With GPT-5, ChatGPT Go would provide message limits, image generation, and file or image uploads ten times greater than the free plan.

According to the press release, "ChatGPT Go is designed for people in India who want greater access to ChatGPT’s advanced capabilities at a price that is more affordable." The existing subscription tiers include ChatGPT Plus, which costs Rs. 1,999 per month and gives heavy users priority access, faster performance, and higher usage limits. OpenAI offers ChatGPT Pro, which costs Rs 19,900 per month, to professionals and businesses who require the greatest scale, customization, and access to the most advanced models. With millions of users, including students, professionals, developers, entrepreneurs, and creators, India is ChatGPT's second-largest market and one of its fastest-growing markets.

OpenAI was inspired, according to Vice President and Head of ChatGPT Nick Turley, by the way millions of Indians use ChatGPT every day for learning, work, creativity, and problem-solving. Turley added: “With ChatGPT Go, we’re excited to make these capabilities even more accessible and easier to pay for through UPI.”

As the company introduced its next-generation model, GPT-5, earlier this month, CEO Sam Altman stated that India, which is currently OpenAI's second-largest market, could soon become its largest worldwide. Altman noted the remarkable rate at which Indian citizens and businesses are adopting AI, describing India as an "incredibly fast-growing" market. “India may very well become our largest market, making it our second-largest market worldwide after the United States. It's growing at a breakneck pace, but what users and Indian citizens are doing with AI is truly remarkable," Altman stated.
