Former world number one badminton player Saina Nehwal today joined the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, hailing Prime Minister Narendra Modi as an “inspiration” with his “hard work” for the country. The 29-year-old international sports star made the formal announcement of her decision at the BJP headquarters where she also met party president JP Nadda.

She joined the party in the presence of general secretary Arun Singh. Nehwal, who has been vocal on social media, said, “I am a hard-working person and like hard-working people. Narendra Modi has been working day and night for the country. If I can do something for the country with him, it will be my good fortune. I draw a lot of inspiration from Modi. He inspires me.”
