Chichi Mata Temple is one of the revered religious sites of the state and it is commonly considered to be the gateway to the temple of Vaishno Devi. The shrine is located 12 km from samba region of Jammu and Kashmir.The visit to the holy shrine of Vaishno Devi is incomplete without the visit to the famous religious monument of Chichi Mata.

* According to a legend, Goddess Sati burnt herself alive in Yagna, which distressed Lord Shiva.
* He picked the corpse of Sati on her shoulder and started his Taandav dance. This horrified all deities in the heaven as this could lead to holocaust.
* This urged Lord Vishnu to unleash his Chakra that cut the Sati’s body into 51 pieces.
* Chichi Mata Temple is the place where smallest finger of Sati fell down.


Every year during Navratra, flag hoisting ceremony takes place where the management committee of Pujya Chichi Devi Mandir Samba hoists flag at devsthan.

* The main tower is at the centre of the temple premise and it is surrounded by other smaller towers.
* There are Lord Shiva idols along with Chichi Mata who is considered as manifestation of Goddess Durga.
* The temple is painted white from outside.

Best time to visit

Large numbers of devotees throng the temple during the festival of Navratra. Every year during Navratra, flag hoisting ceremony takes place.
