2 Hizb militants killed in Pulwama

Two Hizbul Mujahideen militants were killed in a brief encounter in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district this morning. The killings triggered protests in the area in which over one dozen protesters were injured.
Security forces this morning cordoned off Tahab village in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district after inputs that two militants are hiding in the village. As the security forces laid siege to the village, the militants hiding tried to flee and fired at the security forces, triggering a brief gunfight in which two militants were killed.

Srinagar based Defence spokesman said that Army cordoned off Tahab village afer inputs about presence of two militants who were killed in a gun battle. “As the militants fired at us, we retaliated with the fire and killed both the militants. One Army jawan received a minor injury in the encounter”, said an Army officer.
Commander 12 Sector of Rashtriya Rifles of counter insurgency Victor Force, Brigadier Harbir Singh told reporters that they had information about the movement of these two militants in the area for last few days. “For last few days we were getting information about movement of these militants in Tahab area. We had inputs that they are harassing Government officials and political workers in the area”, he said.
The Sector Commander said that as the security forces launched searches, militants fired at them and, in Army retaliation, both the militants were killed. “Based on these inputs, a search operation was launched in this area. During house to house searches of the village, the terrorists fired at the troops from a house. Our troops took positions and fired back and the terrorists were asked to surrender. They refused to surrender and fired heavily on the troops and our troops retaliated during which these two terrorists tried to flee from the house. The two terrorists were killed by the firing on the search party. We recovered an INSAS and SLR rifle from their possession”, he said.
Brigadier Singh described the operation as very smooth. “This was a very clean operation during which we didn’t face any stone pelting as it used to be”, he added.
The Army officer said that the situation for the last two months is improving in South Kashmir. “For last two months, there has been improvement in the situation due to the cooperation of the people. The incidents of stone pelting have also come down and there is lot of improvement”, he said.
The Brigadier hoped that the youth won’t join militancy in South Kashmir in future “They were active for last one year and I feel, the way the situation is developing more youth won’t join the militancy in future”, he said.
The militants have been identified as Shariq Ahmad of Gulzarpora Awantipora and Showkat Ahmed alias Shabir of Mehndi Anantnag. They had joined militant ranks this year only.
Soon after the news of the killing of militants spread in the area, the area observed shut down and protests broke out. People tried to reach to the encounter site and pelted stones on security forces who retaliated with aerial firing and tear smoke. Over a dozen youth were injured one among them is critical as a bullet hit him in the chest. He was identified as Asif Ahmad of Lassipora Pulwama. He has been shifted to District Hospital Pulwama.
The district administration immediately suspended the internet services in entire Pulwama district to prevent the spreading of rumors and mobilization of crowds towards the encounter site.
Large number of people attended the funeral of the Hizbul-Mujahideen militant Shariq Ahmad at his ancestral Takuna village of Pulwama. Hizbul Mujahideen commander Riyaz Naikoo also appeared in the funeral of Shariq.
