The Jammu and Kashmir State Sports Council (JKSSC) has allocated around Rs 2 crore for sports activities in Kashmir Valley and a few lakhs for Jammu in the current year, in yet another instance of discrimination against Jammu region.
According to information obtained under RTI Act, the JKSSC has provided around Rs 1.60 cr to various sports associations and educational institutions under the ‘Khelo India Scheme’ during 2016-17 to Kashmir.
“Rs 59.80 lakh given to J and K Football Association, Rs 25.20 lakh for Wushu Association of J and K, Rs 20 lakh to Degree College Pulwama, and Rs 68 lakh to Delhi Public School, Srinagar, (a private entity) by the JKSSC during 2016-17”, the documents read.
“J and K Football Association, out of the allocated Rs 59.80 lakh, spent Rs 4,68,516 in Srinagar district, Rs 4,68,516 in Kulgam, Rs 5,29,543 in Shopian, Rs 5,29,543 in Ganderbal, Rs 5, 29, 543 in Pulwama, Rs 6,51,597 in Bandipora, Rs 8,93,675 in Baramulla, Rs 8,34,678 in Kupwara, Rs 11,39,813 in Budgam District and Rs 3,43,462 in Anantnag District”, the documents revealed.
Wushu Association of J and K, which represent entire State, conducted one event in Jammu while 10 events were held across the Valley.
Smelling a rat in the allocation/utilization of funds by the JKSSC, former Minister and General Secretary JKPCC, Yogesh Sawhney, asked why was Jammu region ignored by the government time and again.
“The Sports Council has embezzled huge funds”, he alleged, adding he has filed a complaint to unearth the scam.
“The JKSSC provided little information regarding allocation/utilization of funds. The actual information is being concealed”, he said. “If the JKSSC has forgotten Jammu region, or sports activities are not required here, why are youth from Jammu deceived by the current dispensation,” he asked.
