Opening 99-run stand of Ahmed Bandy and Shubham Khajuria guided Jammu and Kashmir to gain the upper hand against Gujarat on the first day of the third round of the Ranji Trophy 2017-18 at the Lalabhai Contractor Stadium, Surat, here on Tuesday.
Piyush Chawla’s 22nd first-class five-wicket haul succoured Gujarat to bowl J&K out for 261 in 77.2 overs
Earlier, opting to bat, the opening duo of Ahmed Bandy and Shubham Khajuria got J&K off to a decent start with a 99-run stand.
But just when it looked like all was going well, J&K suffered a drastic collapse.
Chawla led the pack by dismissing Khajuria (54) and Pranav Gupta (4) before the lunch interval and followed it up by dismissing Parvez Rasool, the skipper, for just four. Chintan Gaja too added his name to the list by accounting for Bandy for 54.
Ian Dev Singh (22) and Puneet Bisht (29), the wicketkeeper-batsman, then got starts but failed to capitalise and fell to Hardik Patel (3 for 57) in quick succession.
Having been reduced to 184 for 8, Bandeep Singh (33*) joined hands with Manik Gupta (20) to take J&K past 200 but it was Mohammed Mudhasir, the No. 11, who blasted four sixes en route to an entertaining 24-ball 35 to take his side to a respectable first-innings total.
In reply, Priyank Panchal (7) and Samit Gohel (8) survived the last 10 overs to take Gujarat to 15 without loss, still 242 runs behind.
