Selection trials for Asian Ski held

Organised by Winter Games Federation of India (WGFI) in association with Winter Games Association of J&K, two-day selection trials for Asian Junior Alpine Ski Championship held at Gulmarg.
Nearly 30 athletes representing different affiliated units of WGFI including J&K, HP, Uttarakhand, IIS&M, HAWS, Indian Army and ABVIM&AS took part in the trials. The trials held with logistic support from Department of Tourism.
The trials were held in Slalom and Giant Slalom events under the supervision of WGFI President, Col J.S Dhillon and the representatives of different states.
Besides ace skiers like Gul Mustafa Dev, Shabir Dar, Dhan Bahadur and Arif Khan, the services of Mehmood Ahmad Lone and Nazir Ahmad were utilised for laying the race course and officiating the trials smoothly.
Pertinently Mehmood Lone recently completed his advanced training in Coach program in Europe.
Notably India is fielding its contingent comprising of boys and girls who are in the age group borne between 1993 and2001 in the said Championship, to be held in Iran in March this year.
The J&K fielded its team consisting of four boys and as many girls, Shaista Shabir, Sabiya Nabi, Zainab Tantri, Tanzeel Wani, Mohammad Shahdad, Wasim Ahmad Bhat, Syed Hamiz and Bilal Ahmad Sheikh in the trials. Sabiya performed well and won third place in both events. Sandhiya and Vesha secured first and second respectively.
The competition was held on Gujar Hut Slope in Khilanmarg vicinity due to scarcity of snow in Kongdori region. The Khilanmarg area is still abuzz of skiing activity while Heli Skiing too is going on smoothly in the backcountry area of Gulmarg. Too many tourists are seen skiing at Gulmarg these days.
