Radio is a powerful and one of the oldest means of communication. Even before the world of internet and television, it was radio that connected people with each other. Radio even played a vital role in the freedom struggle of India, motivating people to participate in the independence movement.

Today, we are celebrating the seventh edition of World Radio Day. In 2011, February 13 was chosen as World Radio Day. This was done after Spain's Radio Academy came up with a proposal in 2010. UNESCO then declared the first World Radio Day in 2011. The day coincided with the United Nations Radio's anniversary, which was established on February 13, 1946. The theme of this year World Radio Day is ''Radio and Sports'' and the sub-themes are Diversity in Sports Coverage, Gender Equality in Sports Coverage and Peace and Development through Sports Coverage.
