Diabetes is often referred to by doctors as diabetes mellitus. It is a condition in which the body has high blood glucose or blood sugar, either because production of insulin is inadequate or cells are not able to respond properly to insulin, or both. Diabetes patients experience frequent urination, hunger and thirst.

There is majorly two type of diabetes. Type 1 Diabetes in which the body is unable to produce insulin. Around 10 % of diabetic patients fall into this category. Type 2 Diabtes in which body produces inadequate insulin. Approx 90 % of patients are type 2. Another type of diabetes is gestational diabetes which affects women during pregnancy. Diabetic patients are at high risk of cardiovascular disease, hence regular monitoring of cholesterol and blood pressure are important.

Here are early signs and symptoms of diabetes
In Type 2 diabetes, early signs are mild that they go out of notice. In Type 1 diabetes, symptoms are severe and happen qucikly. Both the diabetes have commons symptoms

Hunger and Fatigue

Body converts food into glucose that cells use for energy but insulin is needed to bring the glucose in. In diabetes, insulin is not made or is inadequately produced, hence glucose can't get into cells and there is lack of energy.

Frequent Urination and Thirst

People with diabetes pee a lot because kidneys are not able to bring it all back it, this causes more urine. And as there is more urine, a person gets thirsty more often.

Dry Mouth and Itchy Skin

Most of the fluid in the body is converted into pee, hence there is less moisture causing dehydration. This leads to dry and itchy skin.

Blurred Vision

Lenses in the eyes swell up because of change in fluid levels in body. Lenses change shape causing loss in the ability to focus.

Yeast Infections

Yeast thrive on glucose and mostly in warm, moist fold of skin including genitals, between fingers and toes and under breasts.

Slow-healing Sores and Cuts

Wounds don't get healed quickly. High blood sugar affects blood flow causing nerve damage. Other symptoms include pain and numbness in feet, sudden weight loss, nausea and vomiting.

Consult your doctor if you are above 45 and get yourself tested. If you often feel thirsty, have more urine discharge, have a bad stomach ache and sweet breath like that of nail polish remover, it is time to call your doctor. All types of diabetes can be treated. While There is no known cure for Type 1 diabetes, however, Type 2 diabetes can be managed with exercise, diet and weight control programme. While Type 1 patients are treated with regular insulin injections, Type 2 patients seldom require it.
