The State Government on Wednesday appointed Principals for five sanctioned Government Medical Colleges (GMCs), two in Kashmir and three in the Jammu region. With the setting up of these colleges and academic session likely beginning this year, additional 500 MBBS seats will be available in the State.
The colleges could not keep the deadline due to lackadaisical approach and delaying tactics of the just gone PDP-BJP dispensation. However, the process for initiation of these colleges began just within first fortnight of the Governor’s rule.
STATE TIMES in its edition dated May 29, 2018 had exposed the previous government’s failure in opening the five new Medical Colleges at Baramulla and Anantnag in the Kashmir province and Doda, Kathua and Rajouri in the Jammu province, sanctioned by the Centre three years ago with timeline of one year in making these functional.
The former Health Minister D K Manyal had stated that the academic sessions in these GMCs will start next year while his predecessor Bali Bhagat had set the deadline for this session.
Reacting to STATE TIMES report, Minister of State PMO Dr Jitendra Singh had also stated that these colleges could start from this session.
According to sources, the BJP National President Amit Shah during his recent visit to Jammu had assured that the academic session in these five GMCs will start from this session. However, the pace for starting the first session gained momentum with the Governor’s administration ordering the placements.
According to order No 408-HME of 2018 dated July 7, 2018, Dr Javed Choudhary, Professor Paediatric GMC Srinagar has been posted as Principal GMC Baramulla; and Dr Showkat Jeelani. Professor and HoD Surgery GMC Srinagar as Principal GMC College Anantnag in Kashmir Division. In Jammu Division, Dr Ghanshyam Dev, Professor Radio Diagnosis, GMC Jammu has been posted as Principal GMC Doda; Dr Zahid Hussain, Professor Pharmacology GMC Jammu as Principal GMC Rajouri and Dr Bella Mahajan, Professor Microbiology, GMC, Jammu as Principal GMC Kathua.
