Shakib : Disappointed not to fulfill our dream for this mega event

Shakib Al Hasan, Bangladesh's ace all-rounder, was left disappointed as he felt that the missing link in the ongoing World Cup was the lack of desperation, despite them putting in all the effort. Shakib tried his best with bat and ball throughout the tournament, but somehow did not receive enough support from the others that would have helped them progress beyond the group stage.

Bangladesh were knocked out from the semifinal race after they lost to India by 28 runs. They will now end their World Cup campaign against Pakistan at Lord's on July 5. They, however, had started their tournament on the perfect note by beating South Africa, but followed it by losses to New Zealand and England, before having to share points with Sri Lanka. Bangladesh had come mighty close against New Zealand; they had the opposition under pressure but ran out of gas when it was required the most in the middle. New Zealand eventually picked up a two-wicket win, with Bangladesh paying dearly for losing those two points, in hindsight.

From the start of the tournament, however, Bangladesh managed to earn a name for themselves for playing a good brand of cricket. But according to Shakib, that was not good enough. "It is right that we played good [brand] of cricket, but we didn't come here to play good cricket. We wanted to win, but we couldn't do it," he said on Wednesday (July 3). "I think it's very disappointing because we couldn't fulfill our dream that we had for this mega event. From that perspective, I think its very disappointing. if we could have done few small things better, I think we would have got a better result.

"Those of us who are playing know our responsibility that we have to play well. It sometimes happens and sometimes doesn't, that's the thing, but I personally think if our applications were better in some areas, we could have been in a better position and it is true for every department, batting, bowling and fielding. If I talk about the whole summary of the World Cup result-wise, it's very disappointing. There are some positive sides too, but talking about this doesn't make any sense now because at the end of the day, results matter and this is an area that we have to change.

"One thing I can say, is that everyone is trying. Every one of us tried, but I think we should have tried more desperately," he added.

Ahead of the World Cup Bangladesh's squad was widely regarded as the best-ever sent to the showpiece event, largely due to the experience of their core cricketers, along with the new blood they had nurtured. According to Shakib, that did not reflect in the result, with them falling short and having needed to do much better.
