Australia crushed New Zealand by 71 runs in the first ODI at an empty Sydney Cricket Ground today. After New Zealand earlier kept the home side to 258/7, the Australian bowling attack dominated the Kiwi batsmen to dismiss the visitors for 187 in the 41st over. Cricket Australia barred spectators from the match in response to the coronavirus pandemic, leading to the strange sight of players acknowledging milestones to empty grandstands.

Kane negative

It was also revealed that Australian fast bowler Kane Richardson was in quarantine early in the day and had been tested for the virus after feeling unwell. However, he was subsequently cleared of the virus and returned to the ground to rejoin his teammates. The second match will take place on Sunday, also at the SCG. AFP

Brief scores: Australia: 258/7 (Warner 67, Finch 60, Labuschagne 56; Sodhi 3/51); New Zealand: 187 (Guptill 40, Latham 38; Cummins 3/25, Marsh 3/29)

England’s tour of Lanka postponed

London: England’s ongoing tour of Sri Lanka was today called off in view of the novel coronavirus pandemic, the ECB said, calling the situation unprecedented. The decision was announced while the English cricketers were playing the second day of their final warm-up fixture in Colombo. A two-match Test series, part of the World Championship, was due to start in Galle next Thursday. “Due to the COVID-19 pandemic worsening globally, and after discussions with Sri Lanka Cricket, we have today made the decision to return our players to the UK and postpone the forthcoming Test series,” the ECB said in a statement. England’s home series against the West Indies in June and the T20 Blast might also get affected.
