Demanding permanent absorption of 60,000 casual labour employees already serving in various government departments before initiating fresh recruitments, the casual labours on Thursday staged a protest wearing masks and maintaining social distance norms.
They were also demanding implementation of minimum wages act. The protest was led by Jammu And Kashmir Casual Labour United Front.
The protesting employees also threatened to go on 48-hour strike from June 22 in case their demands are not met with within 10 days.
“ The Government of Jammu and Kashmir, is well apprised of the fact that a large number of workers, say about 60,000, have been engaged, by the governments from time to time, during last over 25 years in different departments like PHE, PDD, PWD, Agriculture, Estates Department etc. The workers haveall along been representing to the government for their regularization and paying their wages on monthly basis but in turn the authorities at the helm of affairs continued to cause delay in delivery of justice by constituting committees on committees with no desirable result, “ lamented the protesting employees.
They added, “Government is likely to recruit about 50,000 employees in different categories including 10,000 in class IV cadre by direct recruitment and as such the workers, who are already at the verge of age bar, and have already spent most of prime time of their life in public service, are required to compete as a fresher with highly supplicated test to be conducted for recruitment. Such a process, if at all, adopted by the government ignoring the interests of the poor workers, who are waiting for their regularization for a long time, will straight way be injustice and harsh inviting repercussions.”
