An antibody cocktail called REGN-COV2 designed to treat and prevent coronavirus infection is being tested at FOMAT Medical Research in Oxnard. FOMAT is launching two clinical trials for COVID-19, the disease caused by the SARS-COV-2, on Thursday, reported CBS Los Angeles. Nicholas Focil, CEO at FOMAT, said the experimental treatment looks very much promising as it gives the body to fight it off on its own in a way. REGN-COV2 is developed using two antibodies that latch onto and help neutralise the coronavirus, hampering the virus ability to infect healthy human cells. According to the report, volunteers can get free coronavirus testing at a site across from the Oxnard Main Library - with results returning within an hour. Trial participants testing positive can take part in the study for treatment. This medication is for early onset. You are randomized into one of three arms. Its a combination therapy that you will be in high dose, low dose or placebo. Its a one-time treatment day, so youll get treated that same day and for the next 35 days, youll be followed up with about 15 times, Focil was quoted as saying. The report stated that those who test negative can participate in the second study, which is designed for healthy people who are at high risk of infection,. The participants will be given the medicine and will be monitored for 7 months to evaluate if the treatment can help prevent infection. This one depends on if you are in a household with somebody that has COVID. So whats important with vaccines and preventative trials, in general, is that you have high exposure to the disease, Focil said. The vaccine is around the corner. The treatment is around the corner, and we do need the part of every single person here to make sure this thing gets through, he added. According to Focil, funding for the trials comes from the federal governments Operation Warp Speed project that aims to deliver safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines by January 2021. Meanwhile, American pharmaceutical firm Eli Lilly and Company said it has started phase 3 trial of its experimental COVID-19 antibody treatments to see if it can prevent COVID-19 infection.
