Maharashtra government scraps 70:30 formula for admission in medical courses

New Delhi, 8-Sep-2020

The Maharashtra government on Tuesday has scraped the 70:30 region-wise formula for the admission process in medical courses in the state. The 70:30 ration implemented that 70 percent of the reservation will be for locals (from that region), and 30 percent will be from the rest of the state.
However, Medical Education Minister Amit Deshmukh said that from now the admissions would now be based on the results of students who have appeared for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). For a long period, students and parents in the state have demanded to scrap the 70:30 formula for admissions in medical courses. Under the quota, 70 percent of seats in medical colleges were reserved for students in their districts. The number of medical colleges in the state's Marathwada and Vidarbha regions is less compared to other areas. Hence, students from these regions suffered during admissions in medical colleges.
