16-Oct-2020

A22-year-old Kashmiri woman has alleged that her landlady abused her and called her a "terrorist" during an argument over rent and barged into her rented apartment in East of Kailash area of South Delhi. The woman has also alleged that her landlady trespassed into her apartment and vandalized it in her absence with the help of a man, whom she has not seen before. "So my landlady enters my house along with a man, that I have never seen in my whole life and starts to call me and my friends terrorists just because we are from Kashmir that too, in front of a police official (sic)," the woman alleged in a tweet. She added that her landlady then tried to frame them for "stealing furniture". She said she also took away their furniture in their absence. "She is calling us names, abusing us and provoking us." The woman added that the man who was accompanying her landlady "literally pushed" her and her landlady "tried to attack" her. All of this happened in the presence of a Delhi Police personnel, she alleged. She had rented her East of Kailash apartment from Fame Stay Luxurious Homes. Following this, she went to the Amar Colony police station and lodged a complaint on Wednesday evening, besides sharing the matter on Twitter. Taking note of the case, Delhi Women Commission President Swati Maliwal said she will provide all possible help to the woman. Meanwhile, the Delhi Police has registered an FIR based on her complaint under charges of trespassing and assault. Asked about the matter, Taruna Makhija, the landlady, said she runs Fame Home Stay and had rented the apartment in June. "They were somehow paying rent till August but stopped paying it after that and were not even paying the electricity bill. The rent of this house is Rs 55,000 per month." Taruna has also alleged that flat's electricity bill runs into thousands and the electricity department visited the house and suspended the connection due to non-payment of bill. Refuting these charges, the woman said she and her friend have paid their rent and have evidence of it. She said she also showed the evidence to the police while filing her complaint. Meanwhile, the landlady has also filed a police complaint and an FIR has been lodged. The Delhi Police said it is investigating both complaints.
