Air bordering 'severe' category; dangerously high ammonia level in Yamuna water

New Delhi, 30-Oct-2020

Even as the air quality in Delhi continued to remain in very poor category, there was more bad news for Delhiites as ammonia level has surged to dangerous levels in Yamuna river water and potable water supply has been affected in several areas. The Delhi Jal Board on Friday said in a release that water supply will be available at low pressure till the ammonia level comes down in the Yamuna river. "As the flow from the Upper Ganga canal is stopped due to closure for its annual maintenance. It is observed the flow in both conduits Sonia Vihar & Bhagirathi plants is also very less same as last year during maintenance of canal. Also ammonia level is speedly & suddenly increasing in Yamuna River. So the production of Bhagirathi Plant & Sonia Vihar Plant may get affected due to which clear water will be available at low pressure till the ammonia level reduces in Yamuna River," the DJB said. The Board said water supply is likely to be affected in parts of South Delhi, East Delhi, Northeast Delhi and in NDMC areas. The public has been asked to judiciously use water and has released numbers for availing free water tanker service.
