BJP youth wing files police complaint against TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee for hurting religious sentiments

11-01-2021

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) youth wing has filed a police complaint against the Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee for hurting religious sentiments over his remarks on goddess Sita. While addressing the public in a rally in West Bengal earlier, Kalyan Banerjee compared Goddess Sita's abduction episode with Hathras gangrape victim's fate saying that Sita said this to Lord Ram "I was abducted by Ravan and not by your chelas or else my fate would have been same as Hathras victim!" Reacting to his statement, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra had earlier said that it denigrates Hindus. "Can he dare to say these words for any other religion?" he asked. "As far state the statement made by TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee regarding Sita-Maa is concerned, it is absolutely a derogatory statement. He has offended the sentiment of crores of Hindus across the length and breadth of this country. I see this as a typical appeasement policy of Mamata Banerjee," Patra added.

The Trinamool MP is not new to making controversial statements, he had earlier equated Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman with a "venomous snake" for her handling of the economy, drawing a sharp reaction from the BJP which said Mamata Banerjee has lost control over her party leaders who are "uttering nonsense" out of frustration. "Just like a venomous snake kills a human being, people of the country are dying one by one owing to Nirmala Sitharaman who has shattered the country's economy," he had said while addressing a protest rally at Bankura against rising fuel prices and the proposed privatisation of trains. West Bengal is gearing up for the upcoming Assembly Election for 294 seats this year. The tenure of the current government in the state of West Bengal is coming to an end on May 30.
