Racket selling baby girls for Rs 60,000 & boys for Rs 1.5 lakh busted in Mumbai

A racket that had been selling babies to people was busted by the crime branch in Mumbai. As many as 8 people, including 6 women were involved with the racket. The accused used to sell baby girls for Rs 60,000 and boys for Rs 1.50 lakh. A probe revealed that the accused sold 4 babies in 6 months. The cops, however, suspect that the accused managed to sell more babies. The arrests were made on Saturday.

Cops received tip-off regarding racket

The activities of the racket came to the fore when police sub-inspector Yogesh Chavana and Manisha Pawar of unit 1 got a tip-off about a woman who was selling babies. As per the information, the woman was staying in Dnyaneshwar Nagar, Bandra east. The cops then launched an investigation and identified a woman named Rukhsar Shaikh. Shaikh sold a baby girl she had delivered at VN Desai hospital. Further probe revealed that another woman Shahjahan Jogilkar had sold her baby through Rupali Verma, news agency reported.

On January 14, the police picked up Rukhsar, Shahjahan and Rupali and took them to the police headquarters at Crawford market. Both the women confessed to running the racket. Shaikh confessed that she sold her daughter for Rs 60,000 and baby boy for Rs 1 lakh. Both the babies had been sold through Rupali Sharma. Shahjahan said that she sold her son in 2019 for Rs 60,000. During interrogation, Rupali named two other persons- Heena Khan and Nisha Ahire- who acted as sub-agents. The cops gathered the names of the accused and arrested them. The police also arrested a man named Sanjay Padam, who had bought one of the babies.
