Death of UP man not linked to vaccine, post-mortem awaited in Karnataka case: Health ministry

19-01-2021

Two people have died so far after receiving the coronavirus vaccine in Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka until Monday. However, it has been ruled out that the death of the man in Uttar Pradeshs Moradabad was linked to the vaccine. In the second case from Karnatakas Bellary, a post-mortem report is still awaited. The death of the UP resident is not related to vaccination while a post-mortem report is planned today for the second person, Additional health secretary Manohar Agnani said. The 46-year-old Moradabad hospital worker who died on Sunday after receiving the jab on Saturday was due to cardiopulmonary disease and not the vaccine, according to the health ministry. The report of the autopsy, conducted by three doctors, said that the immediate cause of death was "cardiogenic shock/septicemic shock" due to "cardio-pulmonary disease" and there is "no relation with corona vaccine".

In Bellary, a 43-year-old man vaccinated on Saturday died on Monday. The cause of death is anterior wall infarction with cardiopulmonary failure. The post-mortem is scheduled today at Vijayanagar Institue of Medical Sciences, Bellary, Karnataka, the ministry added. "Today morning when he came to duty, he complained of chest pain at around 9.30 am and collapsed. He was treated immediately and referred to Jindal Sanjeeveni hospital for higher treatment where he was admitted at 11.15 am. The highest level of treatment was provided, but he could not be saved," the Karnataka Health Department said in a statement. "Apart from him, none of the other health care workers who took the vaccine from the same vial had any adverse events. The district-level AEFI Committee met and had detailed discussions. The conclusion is that the death was due to cardiorespiratory arrest secondary to acute anteroseptal wall MI," it added. As many as 580 adverse events following immunisation (AEFI) have been reported in India which began its vaccination programme on January 16. Seven of these people have been hospitalised.
