The vaccination drive against novel coronavirus in Gujarat has reached lakhs of people already. As per the state health department, Gujarat has so far vaccinated around 6.6 lakh people till Tuesday. Gujarat's population as per the National Population Commission was around 6.79 crore in 2019 which means nearly 1% of the state's entire population has been vaccinated so far. In the last 24 hours, ending 5 PM on Tuesday, Gujarat vaccinated over 56,000 people including health care workers and front line COVID warriors who are at high risk of contracting the infectious disease. The healthcare workers and frontline workers are being vaccinated first before the vaccine reaches the general public in the state. So far around 59% of the cumulative population of the healthcare workers and the frontline warriors have been vaccinated in the state. There are around 4.33 lakh healthcare workers and around 6.93 lakh front-line workers who are to be vaccinated, as per the health department. However, currently, only 6.6 lakh people have received the vaccine. There are a total of 974 centers across the state where the healthcare workers and frontline workers are being vaccinated against the infectious disease. As per a report in the Times of India, two-thirds of the healthcare workers and one-third of the front-line workers constitute the 6.6 lakh that have been vaccinated so far in the state. As per sources, the vaccination drive to cover around 1 crore general population of the state will begin from the end of February. Senior officials have been asked to ensure vaccination of staff members under them. The third phase of vaccination covering one crore population is likely to start from the end of February, an official was quoted as saying by news agency.
